The Worst Place To Eat in Buenos Aires is “El Humo”

A parilla called “El Humo”, located on the corner of Castro Barros and Quito in  Almagro.  A shithole, a betrayal of all that’s  right and decent in eating out in Buenos Aires. Please don’t go there.

Barbaric Customs

It’s not often that I completely agree with an article by Christopher Hitchens but I do in this case, which I came across here. It articulates an irritation that I have often felt and never done anything about. No more.

Wheat

I wonder if the farm protest isn’t having consequences that the media have failed to pick up on. Last night we made a pasta salad and the pasta, supposedly consisting of 100% durum wheat, disintegrated into spongy fragments in the time we are accustomed to boiling it in order to get it barely al dente.

Could it be that the 100% durum is being cut with lower grade stuff in order to make it go further and thus avoid the spectre of bare shelves in the supermarkets? This would tend to keep the squeeze on the government while not irritating the porteño middle class, accustomed in any case to boiling its pasta into a slop.
