Writing in El Páis about the death of the bulldozer driver whose rampage cost three people their lives in Jerusalem last week Juan Miguel Muñoz says
It’s inconceivable that the authorities might consider bringing charges against the off duty soldier who shot Duwiyat (the bulldozer driver) at point plank range when the bulldozer was stopped and when three soldiers and police officers were in a position to overpower the terrorist with no problems.
It’s the last three words in this quote that interest me. A major throroughfare in the capital of Israel has just seen a large piece of earth moving equipment being deliberately driven into a bus and several cars. Three people have been killed and many more injured. Nobody knows if the attacker is acting alone or as part of a wider plan. Nobody knows whether he is armed or carrying explosives. There is screaming, noise and panic on all sides. This is the situation in which Muñoz thinks the bulldozer driver could have been arrested “with no problems”. Nice.
I wonder what El País would have to say if an off duty member of the Guardia Civil shot an ETA sympathiser in a bulldozer who had laid waste to the Gran Vía in Madrid. I wonder what chance there would be of charges being brought against the shooter. I’m sure there would be no talk of arrests without problems and the chances of charges being brought would be somewhere between slim and zero.
