At last, someone has had the courage to tell Hugo Chávez to shut up. It happened at the Plenary Session of the Ibero-American Summit that’s taking place in Chile at the moment. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero had the floor and was replying to Chávez’s speech in which he had described the former Prime Minister of Spain, José María Aznar, as a fascist. Chávez interrupted him, insisting that Aznar was indeed a fascist. El País takes up the story.
In the face of these remarks Zapatero once more demanded respect for the former Prime Minister. He said “One might be diametrically opposed to a particular ideological position and I wouldn’t be someone close to Aznar’s ideas but he was chosen by the Spanish people and I demand respect for that”.
Then the visibly angered King raised his hand and with a furious and resounding “Why don’t you shut up?”, demanded that Chávez let Zapatero speak. The President of Chile (and chair of the meeting), Michelle Bachelet intervened and said “No private dialogue please, you have had time to set out your positions”.
I’m not a big fan of monarchies but this story’s fair made my day.
